Lipid disorders are common in dogs, with most arising from secondary causes such as endocrine imbalances, cholestatic liver disease, or protein-losing nephropathies. Two primary lipid disorders—idiopathic hyperlipidemia in miniature schnauzers and hypercholesterolemia in briards—are also recognized. Visualization of a lipemic fasted blood sample or elevated plasma cholesterol or triglyceride in combination with clinical assessment is the method by which most lipid disorders are diagnosed. Cholesterol and triglyceride are components of larger molecules called lipoproteins, which have a complex and highly regulated metabolism that is important to understand when altered by lipid

Comparison of plasma lipoprotein profiles and malondialdehyde between hyperlipidemia dogs with/without treatment
BACKGROUND The aim of this study is to compare metabolic parameters, malondialdehyde as a lipid oxidation marker, and lipid profiles between dogs with untreated hyperlipidemia and hyperlipidemia with treatment, in order to examine the usefulness of malondialdehyde and lipid profiles as diagnostic parameters at early stages of hyperlipidemia. RESULTS Dog samples were collected from four differ...
متن کاملLipid metabolism and hyperlipidemia in dogs.
Lipid metabolism in dogs can be divided into exogenous and endogenous pathways and exhibits some unique characteristics compared to other species. Hyperlipidemia is common in dogs, and can be either primary or secondary to other diseases. Secondary hyperlipidemia is the most common form and can be a result of endocrine disorders, pancreatitis, cholestasis, protein-losing nephropathy, obesity, a...
متن کاملTherapy of Canine Hyperlipidemia with Bezafibrate
BACKGROUND Bezafibrate (BZF) is effective in the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia in human patients, but there are no data on its use in dogs. OBJECTIVE To assess the safety of BZF in hyperlipidemic dogs and its efficacy in decreasing serum triglyceride (TG) and cholesterol (CHO) concentrations. ANIMALS Forty-six dogs, 26 females and 20 males, mean (±SD) age of 9 (±3) years, with TG ≥150 m...
متن کاملUltrasonographic Findings of Most Common Surgical Disorders of Gastrointestinal Tract in Dogs and Cats
Objective: To evaluate the efficiency of ultrasound for diagnosis of different gastro-intestinal surgical affections in dogs and cats. Design: Clinical study. Animals: 36 dogs and 20 cats. Procedures: Ultrasonography was performed using two real-time ultrasound machines. The entire abdomen was examined ultrasonographically while the animal was in dorsal recumbency. Percutaneous ultrasound-gu...
متن کاملAge effects on plasma cholesterol and triglyceride profiles and metabolite concentrations in dogs
BACKGROUND In dogs, occurrence of lipid metabolism disorders such as obesity and diabetes mellitus has increased markedly in recent years. Hyperlipidemia has been regarded as a common characteristic for obese animals and hyperlipidemic condition may be associated with inflammation, oxidative stress and lipid composition changes. In this study, we investigated the changes in plasma cholesterol a...
